Phong Nha Ke Bang και Σπήλαιο Χανγκ Σον Ντονγκ (Hang Son Doong)
Το Hang Son Doong (Χανγκ Σον Ντονγκ που στα Βιετναμέζικα μεταφράζεται ως ο Ποταμός του Βουνού), βρίσκεται στο Εθνικό Πάρκο Phong Nha Ke Bang κοντά στα σύνορα με το Λάος. Ανακαλύφθηκε τυχαία το 1991 από έναν ντόπιο αγρότη τον Ho Khanh όταν ξαφνικά το έδαφος υποχώρησε κάτω από τα πόδια του και αποκαλύφθηκε η μεγάλη αυτή σπηλιά με μήκος πάνω από πέντε χιλιόμετρα και με τμήματα που φτάνουν μέχρι τα 200 μέτρα σε ύψος και 150 μέτρα σε πλάτος.
Είναι το μεγαλύτερο σπήλαιο του κόσμου και το διαπερνά ένας υπόγειος ποταμός (ο Ποταμός του Βουνού) από τον οποίο πήρα και το όνομά του και ξεπερνάει άνετα την σπηλιά Deer στη Μαλαισία, η οποία είχε το ρεκόρ μέχρι στιγμής. Οι σταλαγμίτες φθάνουν μέχρι και 80 μέτρα σε ύψος και αποτελεί μνημείο παγκόσμιας πολιτισμικής κληρονομιάς της UNESCO.
Son Doong – THE LARGEST CAVE ON PLANET EARTH
At over 5km long, with sections reaching up to 200m tall and 150m wide, Hang Son Doong is large enough to house an entire New York City block, complete with 40 story skyscrapers. With a total measured volume of 38.5 million cubic metres, this comfortably surpasses Deer Cave in Malaysia, which was considered to be the previous record holder. Stalagmites up to 80m high have also been surveyed, the tallest ever encountered. Less people have seen the inside of Hang Son Doong than have stood on the summit of Mount Everest.
